So I know it's been forever since I posted, but that's how my life goes. I haven't really felt like there has been anything super super exciting to report on, until now. I have several blogs in the works, but my first post back isn't about me at all. Please read this story.

I know many of you already dislike this woman because she has a monotone voice and is not entertaining. She has some delicious recipes, and for the most part I like her, but until she gives an adequate reason for not being able to fulfil this wish or grants this wish I am BOYCOTTING HER SHOW, maybe even Food Network (I know Mike is rejoicing).

Christmas Cards...

Ok, I'm jumping on the Shutterfly bandwagon! I've noticed via several other blogs that I read, that Shutterfly is running a promotion for bloggers. 50 free Christmas cards if you post regarding the cards. I have never used Shutterfly before, but I have heard great things. One thing I've seen that I love is the photo calendars - they sure do make great gifts:) I've checked out their designs, and I am a fan! Every year I say I’m going to send out Christmas cards then keep it up throughout the following year. I want to send out birthday cards, and anniversary cards, and thinking of you cards, and whatever else would make someone happy. I always do great the first couple of months… those of you with January and February birthdays are probably thinking, “Oh, I thought you already did send out cards”….nope, just through the beginning of March or so, then it starts going downhill. I know that sounds really cheesy, but it's true. Twelve years ago today I began to fall for Mike. Why? Well, he made me laugh. Lots! I found him to be charming and dorky all at the same time. Over the years my love for Mike has grown and every day I find more ways to love him. I've learned that you never really know everything about the person you love, and that's what makes everyday together special. Because just when you think they are predictable and in a routine something changes. I know that since our wedding there have been nags and arguments, but the good memories and the special time shared together far outway any of the bad. Hook...

Tonight Alana, Kristen, sister and I went out in Georgetown for DC's Restaurant. We chose the restaurant Hook on M Street for a delicious 3 course meal. We had reservations for 7:15, but the Key Bridge had other plans - traffic - shocking...I know. But we made it by 7:20 and gave our name to the host. It was packed...which in my mind is a good sign that there is great food ahead. We waited somewhat patiently at the bar enjoying the great decor and chats with other hungry guests. We finally sat down to our table in the upstairs dining room at around 8:10. Our server came over and explained the menu options to us with his recommendations and then left us to think about our options while he retrieved our chilled bottle of Ponga (white wine - delish). We each chose our dishes and ordered. For my first course I chose the Arugula & Prosciutto salad with parmesan, lemon and extra virginia olive oil, as did Kristen. Alana chose the grilled calamari in a basil pesto cream sauce. And Lauren chose the 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell with a coriander mignonette. They were all delicious. For our entrees Alana and I both ordered the Ahi Tuna cooked to medium rare and were highly impressed that it was cooked to perfection. Both Kristen and Lauren also enjoyed their fish selections. We were nearly stuffed when dessert arrived, but were excited to try our third course selections. Alana, Lauren and I all ordered the lemon tart with blueberry coulis and Kristen ordered the cookie ice cream dish. It was the perfect finish to our delicious meal. I would highly recommend going to Hook, make a reservation, and don't go during busy season (ie Restaurant Week). Thanks ladies for making it so easy to enjoy a meal!

Last night we went out to celebrate Kristen's completion of the CMP exam. Kristen, Alana, Michelle, Hillers, Mike and Erin Morgan, and I started the night out at 11th Street Lounge, where I enjoyed a delicious, and half priced oneone burger and the Sacred Stone Red wine :) After dinner we walked over to Eventide and hung out for a bit sipping on more wine and watching the bartenders make crazy complicated drinks. Around 10:30, the Hillers and Morgans dashed, leaving Alana, Kristen and I to chat it up at the bar until Mikey and Pattie arrived! We continued to catch up once the Mike's got there and had so much fun we were there til closing. I had a great time and hope everyone else did too!

We're so happy you're done studying for the CMP exam!!! Hopefully this means we'll see you around more! What's the CMP stand for, you ask? It stands for Certified Meeting Professional. The Convention Industry Council (CIC) launched the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) program to enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals, promote the status and credibility of the meeting profession and advance uniform standards of practice. A CMP designation shows that an individual is dedicated to the profession; it also conveys expertise in planning, managing and executing successful meetings and events.

I'm sure you did great...and can't wait to hear the good news in a "quick" 8 weeks, when the results come out!

Dinner & a Movie...

Tonight Sister, Alana & I headed out in Arlington for a true girls night. We started out the night at Rocklands Barbecue with delicious sandwiches, yummo!!! Afterward, we headed to Courthouse to watch "It's Complicated". And boy was it.... we were in a rush so we drove to the dungeon level of the garage and parked. As I followed Alana and Lauren to the stairwell, I, of course, stubbed the toe of my shoe in a hole (not a huge hole, but a hole nonetheless) and lunged forward towards the wall, faceplanting. Don't worry, it was actually quite funny. I didn't hurt my body, just me ego. So as Alana and Lauren realized I wasn't behind them they turned to find me sitting up, dying laughing. It was hysterical. We honestly stood there and laughed for about 3 minutes. Too funny. We finally made our way to the ticket counter and proceeded into the movie. We watched about 10 minutes of movie previews, in which we continued to laugh...almost too much. If you haven't seen this movie - GO!!! It was amazing!! Thanks ladies for an amazing and fun night out!

The Future...

Today I had a chance to visit the grounds of the future Sibley Medical Office Building (MOB). It's a very exciting time for everyone involved. Sibley will be undergoing so many changes in the next 7 years, all for the better. June 1, 2009 was really the day things started, as the Dalecarlia entrance to Sibley was closed to begin construction on the MOB and the 5 story parking garage. The goal of the MOB is to offer doctoral services close to the future new hospital to include general internal medicine, orthopedics and ortho surgery, obgyn services and more. The MOB building will be 5 stories tall, with the first floor housing the retail facilities of a pharmacy, a gift shop and an Einstein Bagel location. Sibley hopes to complete this construction by late fall 2010, just a little over a year from now! Once the MOB and garage are completed and occupied Sibley will begin the demolition and reconstruction of the Cancer Center, then it's onto the task of building the new Sibley Memorial Hospital. The NEW hospital will be a LEED certified building with 328 state of the art private rooms. Mr. Price, Senior VP for Real Estate & Construction is overseeing this project, and says the entire project (MOB, Garage, Cancer Center, new Auditorium, new Hospital, landscaping) should be completed in approximately 7 years. I hope I can stick it out to see the end...and more!!!

Last night Jill, Andy, Summer, Michelle, Julia and I headed out to Nick's Bar & Grill in Alexandria to celebrate Julia's upcoming nuptials to her fiance Eric. We started the evening off with a country line dancing lesson where we learned 3 different dances from our instructor Shawn. Then we sat down for some dinner - a wide array of mostly fried foods - then on to more dancing and a little Karaoke. Jill even got to dance with her favorite old man - who apparently is always there, and quite a good partner. It was a great night with fun and friends, some of whom I haven't seen since our small group split off months ago. Congratulations and best wishes to Julia and Eric!

4 Year Anniversary...

Congratulations to me!!!! Today (all be it a Saturday) is my 4 year anniversary of working at Sibley Memorial Hospital. For those of you who have known me since high school, I'm sure you are shocked. In my teenage years I probably held more than 20 different jobs ranging from my first job at Salem Avalanche Baseball Stadium, to the Sun Station to a variety of shoe stores (to fulfill my shoe buying fetish/addiction via a discount), to Heronimus, O'Charley's...the list goes on and on... My parents (specifically my dad) always worried that this trend might continue and that I would never hold a job for more than a year. Also, my dad hated doing my taxes, as I usually had 4-6 W-2's each tax season :) sorry daddy! Upon graduating from Roanoke College I got my first job mainly for it's location - close to Mike. It was with O'Charley's, with whom I had worked for 2 years on and off as a server, but was now in Fredericksburg as the Office Manager; handling payroll, hr functions, wc and actual restaurant duties. I couldn't get out of there quick enough.

So when Sarah Miller, a friend of Mike's from MWC called and said she was going back to school to be a nurse and wanted to know if I would be interested in applying for her position as an HR Assistant at Sibley - I was completely overwhelmed with joy. Granted, I still had to interview for the position, but was confident that I could do the job. I applied, got called for an interview and bought a new suit. The day of the interview (a Monday) I got in my car, started driving to DC, unfortunately, I got terribly lost, had a tearful breakdown for lack of being able to get a hold of anyone in HR (Monday's were there staff meeting days - and the phone kept going to voicemail), had to call my dad so he could provide directions via the phone while I was driving (in Upper Marlboro, MD) and then finally made it about 45 minutes late for my interview. Fortunately, Queenie and the rest of the staff were kind enough to see me even though I was late. About 3 days later I got a call with an offer to be the HR Assistant and accepted. YAY!!!

I started about 2 weeks later, after moving up to Alexandria. How great is that....I went to Roanoke studying Business Administration/Sociology/Healthcare Administration and landed a job doing (almost) exactly what I wanted to do, knowing I had room to advance to the career of my dreams!!! I worked as the HR Assistant for almost 1 year before being promoted to the position of Workers' Compensation Specialist, and then about 1 year later was promoted again to Workers' Compensation & Benefit Specialist, and that's where I've been ever since.

Words cannot describe how much I love working at Sibley....most days. There is the occasional day (or week in May) where I am overly stressed, but still for the most part look forward to coming to work. The people at Sibley are like family to me. I find peace knowing that I can walk through the hospital and know most people (mainly day shift) by name. Everyone smiles and says hello, and are always willing to help. Yes, there are a few exceptions (just like everywhere else) where you may encounter a rude person here or there, but for the most part, it's wonderful. I'm so proud to say I work at Sibley and can't wait to see what the future has in store for me!

Merrills in Town...

This weekend was a blast, Mike's parents came into town, as well as his little sister Lauren. Everyone arrived Friday night around 8:00 and we headed out to dinner at TGI Fridays, mainly because it was close to Mike's parent's hotel. We started with a round of drinks and some apps, had a delicious dinner then called it a night around 10:30. Saturday morning I was up bright and early, for some unknown reason. So at 8am I was baking chocolate chip cookies. Then onto cooking an unplanned brunch of steak, eggs, bacon, potato casserole, and fresh fruit. The family arrived around 11 and we gorged ourselves. Then it was onto National Harbor where we visited with the outdoor vendors, Mike's mom bought Lauren and I some great earrings. Then we wandered into Stonewall Kitchen (heaven), Godiva - where I signed up for the Chocolate Club (even though I'm not a huge chocolate person, but it was still delicious, then a little afternoon happy hour at Rosa Mexicano. We thought about heading into see a Wolf Trap show - The Temptations & The Four Tops...but we were already a bit tired so instead we decided to eat some more...so we freshened up a bit, and headed into the city for dinner at Buca di Beppo where we continue to eat ridiculous amounts of food and then headed home about 11, where most of us passed out either in recliners, loveseats or couches. I don't even remember Mike's parents leaving, I only remember waking up Sunday morning wandering where everyone went. Sunday we all met up at about 11 and went to check out a couple of houses then lunched at Chili's...then onto check out more houses in Alexandria, Falls Church and Springfield. Mike dropped me off at 3, and I said goodbye to his family, and then they apparently went onto check out some major row houses in Old Town just for the fun of it....one of them, was a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath listed for 1.2 million dollars - SERIOUSLY????? who buys that? Like I said, it was a great weekend, but I think I really gained about 10 pounds. So back to the gym and eating healthy tomorrow :)

Tonight a group of us met up at Spider Kelly's in Arlington to have a celebration for Hillers' birthday. We arrived a little late due to traffic, but made it in time to buy Hiller's a drink, eat some delicious three day chicken that's marinated in cumin and garlic then fire roasted in a hot oven. We also shared a delicious side item called "cardiac mac-n-cheese" - it was amazing. It was nice to catchup with everyone, Hillers, Michelle, Hillers' dad, Erik, Danny, Kaity, Jen, Phil, Kristen, Rob, Dave and Katy (sorry if I left anyone out). I had never been there before...but the food and cocktail menu were unique and descriptive...can't wait to go back.

Connecticut Visit...

Sunday morning, Mike and I woke up as quietly as possible, as not to wake our bed neighbors (Hillers & Michelle) and hit the road toward Danbury, Connecticut. Even though our gps advised us to go from Frederick, Maryland (our starting location) through Harrisburg, PA - Mike and I had other ideas. We headed towards Philly, and at about 9am had the breakfast of champions - Pat's Cheesesteaks!!! Surprised to say, we weren't the only ones in line even at the early hour. We ate quickly, hit up a Dunkin Donuts for some iced fuel (i.e. delicious iced coffee) and continued on. Can I just ask - why does the GW Bridge toll ticket, and all tickets like it, have to be so confusing? Who came up with them? $19 in tolls later we arrived to Janine and Ryan's (new) home. Patty, Mike, Lauren, Sharon, Carol, and Butch were waiting for us (not) to get the party started. I could tell when I arrived and saw the array of food on the counter it would not be a week of dieting, or even eating healthy for that matter. As the afternoon went on more family showed up...in total about 25 people enjoyed the barbecue and pool. I personally enjoyed the sun, pool and my new book (yes, you read that correctly). It was my heaven (well, maybe minus the chatter). As the evening approached the pool emptied out and the chiminea was lit. Before I knew it we were all gathered around, roasting marshmallows and laughing - good times. 11pm came quick, and we were all exhausted. Jean and Joe headed back to NY. Patty, Mike and Lauren headed to the Pink's for the night. And we were lucky enough to stay in Ryan and Janine's guest room. I slept great. For those of you who don't know...up in CT, and other NE states many people do not have central air. So we cracked the windows, got under the covers and ----were amazed at the silence we heard (or rather - noise we didn't hear). We're so not used to that being as our bedroom is on King Street. It was amazing....I could have stayed forever.

Monday the men - Mike, "Michael" - as he's known by the fam, Ryan and Butch headed out for a round of golf. The ladies - Carol, Patty, Sharon, Janine, Emma, Lauren and I headed to Target. Now, I know...there are targets in VA, but this was a special trip because we were helping Janine pick out Emma's dance clothes for her new ballet classes. After that we introduced Patty to a Home Goods store, where I think she fell in love. We found a small table she was in need of and she found a couple of other items. For lunch we met up with Jean, Joe and Carolyn at Chili's and waited for the guys to finish up. The rest of the day was spent much like the first - eating a lot - but this time it was the family recipe tomato sauce with meatballs, spaghetti and italian bread. For dessert we had ice cream sundaes. I felt like I was going into a food coma...but managed to wake up enough to play Blurt with the cousins. I'm not so good at that game....so I was glad when we headed "home" at about 11.

Tuesday was there before we knew it and, of course, it was raining. So we ate breakfast and headed to the Brookfield Bowling Alley. Crazy. We had two lanes - Butch, Carol, Mike and Patty versus Michael, Lauren and I. Check out the pics and videos - pretty much sums it up.

After we crushed them - we headed to Loew's Movie Theater to see Public Enemies - AMAZING!! We had all the popcorn and diet coke we could consume - and more.....you know, cause we hadn't eaten in like 2 hours. We finished up the movie at about the same time Sharon, Ryan and Janine were getting off work. After everyone had freshened up, we headed to Bruno's for a delicious New York style pizza supper. Huge pizzas, so many toppings...Mikey was in heaven. A fierce game of smarty party ensued, until about 11, then it was time for bed again. But, before leaving we said our goodbyes to Mike's parents, aunt Carol and uncle Butch, cause we were headed back to VA the next morning.

This morning, we said our goodbyes to Ryan, Janine and Emma as they headed off to work and daycare. We hit the road around 10am, looking forward to more tolls. We made it back to VA around 3pm in time to pick up Emmie from the vet.

It was an amazing time and I really enjoyed seeing all of the family again. Can't wait to go back!!
Thank you Ryan, Janine, Butch, Carol, Sharon, Joe and Jean for taking time off work , feeding us and entertaining us. We love you and miss you already!!! Here are some pictures of Ryan and Janine's new house...we loved it and can't wait to see it after they've done all of the renovations they have planned!

Gary Michael Morgan!!!! Last night was beautiful, as were Erin and the entire wedding party! We departed the Fairfield Inn on the shuttle bus for the Inn at Stone Manor, arriving just in time to sign the guest book, enjoy a fresh cup of lemonade and take our seats for the outdoor ceremony. Erin's bridesmaids each wore a different style dress in a gorgeous blue jewel tone; earrings to match courtesy of Alyssa. The groomsmen were tan suits, making it a casual handsome. The ceremony was short, sweet, to the point and even included a high five! After the ceremony, the cocktail hour held a delicious array of options - bacon wrapped scallops, steak bruschette, avocado spring rolls, assorted cheeses, fresh fruits and more. We barely left room for the delicious dinner of filet and crab cake!!! The tented reception was one I will never forget. The bride and groom entertained, with some extra help from our friends Chris York and Phil Springmann - and their hilarious dance moves. The cake was not only beautiful but delicious. As we boarded the shuttle back to the hotel the party continued and plans were made...we headed to Champs for "after wedding drinks". We closed out the night at about 1:30am and made our way back to our hotel - so we could wake up and hit the road at 6am for our road trip to CT.

Last night Alana and I drove down to Afton (Charlottesville), Virginia to Veritas Vineyard where we met up with Ginna and her boyfriend Jacob there. Each summer they host "Starry Nights" one Saturday a month for the months of June, July, August & September. Because I'm a member of the Veritas Wine Club and get 2 free tickets to each event plus 20% off any purchases - Awesome!!! There is live music, wine and the big outdoors! It's a great place to hang out with your family, friends, blankets, lawnchairs and dancing shoes for an unforgettable night under the stars. For last night's event the band Abbey Road performed - they're a Beatles coverband. They were great. Looking forward to many more trips to the Charlottesville wine trail! Especially since we found a Bahama Sno Shack on the way home!!!!!!!! Yay Berry's Jubilee!

Tonight we had the chance to help Jill celebrate her 27th birthday. We started the evening at The Gardner residence with a pizza party! After pizza we cut up and enjoyed Jill's birthday cake - an Ice Arena... yummy! Then a bunch of us headed over to the Fairfax Ice Arena for a Skate-a-bration!!! Fun stuff. Much to my surprise neither Mike nor I wiped out...it was so much fun. Can't wait to o back! Happy Birthday Jill (a couple days early).

Broken...

You might be asking yourself....why does Sarah have pictures of laundry on her blog... Well, it's because our washer and dryer have been broken since May 17th and I wanted to explain what a big pain in the butt it is. Yes, graciously, our landlords have told us to take our laundry to the wash n fold, keep the receipt and deduct the cost from our rent...but I don't think that they have any urgency in fixing it or any understanding of how much of a hassle it is to lug 5 bags of laundry down the steps, around the block, up 2 miles in the car, unload 5 bags, deal with the guy who barely speaks English, remember to get/keep a receipt, unload the 5 bags, walk around the block, walk through a crowded Greek restaurant and up the skinny steps to our apartment. We realistically run our washer/dryer (when it's working) every other day, just to keep up with all the clothes we wear to work and to the gym. Have you ever had a pair of your husband's stinky sweat drenched gym clothes sit in the laundry basket for more than 2 days - it is not a pleasant sight or smell. They were suppose to deliver the washer/dryer last week, when they arrived the found out that because the washer/dryer was so old the electrical socket needed to be updated for the new washer/dryer. Great....just another delay. Today the new washer/dryer and new outlet are suppose to arrive and be installed. We'll see if it actually happens.

A Night to Remember...

About a year and a half ago, Mike and I were invited by our friends Brett & Jill to come to their Thursday night "Small Group". Small group at that point was a very casual Bible study amongst several other married couples - ranging from devout Christians to new Christians and more. The Sprays; Andy & Matt, were leading the group of The Gardners, Witherspoons and us; the Merrills. It was fantastic! We would meet every Thursday at The Gardner's house, where Jill had cooked dinner for us and then after dinner we'd casually sit in the living room and read the Bible then discuss our thoughts and questions. I must admit, I grew up in the church, but had never really been part of a Bible study group, and Mike had his apprehensions as well. But as the weeks went on we felt more and more like part of a family. After a while our group expanded, The Witherspoons opened up there own Bible study in Centreville and we took on a few new members from New Life Westmoreland. Quickly our "Small Group" grew into a group that was too big to fit around the dinner table and too loud to study with sleeping babies upstairs. So again, our group expanded. Those people in group that were mildly competent with the Bible and their beliefs began meeting at The Asbenson's home. Our group then switched to Wednesday nights and invited anyone and everyone we knew to participate - with the understanding that it wasn't the kind of "Small Group" that pushed the Bible and God's beliefs down your throat. Thankfully we had interest. Several of our friends have started coming consistently and our group has begun to grow and learn again. Which brings me to the point of this blog....

Throughout everything the Gardner's have been great friends and an inspiration to me of what a good marriage should strive to be. Not to say that my marriage or theirs is perfect, but going to church and attending small group has definitely had an impact on my life and theirs. Because they believe so firmly in God they have decided to be baptized as believers. Tonight we met at their community pool where our friends Andy & Matt Spray baptized them. Afterwards we had a great cookout and socialized. I'm so proud and honored to have been there and witnessed this, it was truly a night to remember!

Early this morning Mike and I headed out to Reston to support our friends Brett & Jill Gardner; a.k.a. the Dia~Beaters. The American Diabetes Association created the Tour de Cure - a series of bike rides that begin and end at the Reston Towncenter. Participants had to raise at least $175 to participate, but could raise more to support diabetes research. There were 5 different
distances you could choose to ride:

1-12 Mile Family Fun Ride
12/20/32 Mile Fitness Test Ride
33 Mile Metric Half Century Ride
63 Mile Metric Century Ride
100 Mile Century Ride

The Gardners courageously took on the 33 Mile Half Century Ride. They got started on the course at about 9am and crossed the finish at about 1pm. I'm so proud that they were able to support such a great cause! I hope to be able to be part of their team next year...

He's HUGE!!! But not only that he's now sitting up on his own. Peter is a wonderful big brother, but that doesn't mean he doesn't pick on Aaron every now and again...but he better watch out because before he and we know it, Aaron will be as big if not bigger than him.

It's crazy that this little baby who was born 5 weeks premature and stayed days in the NICU is now such a handsome and healthy little man. Can't believe he'll be 1 year old in July! Crazy!

To the new Mr. & Mrs. Tucker Watson who were married yesterday at The Reservoir in Richmond, Virginia. Tucker is the youngest brother of 3 - Brad - Mike's best friend and the best man from our wedding, and Matt. The Watson's grew up next door to Mike & Lauren until 2001 when, for work reasons, the Watson's moved to Richmond. Tucker met Samantha in high school and have a very similar relationship to Mike and I, in the fact that they are high school sweet hearts. Both Sam and Tucker graduated in 2008 from Clemson and they now live in Winston Salem, North Carolina where Tucker works in the computer industry and Sam just completed her first year of med school. They are such a beautiful couple, and you can truly tell how much love they have for eachother. Congrats and best wishes!!!

Wow, I can't believe it's already been 5 years since my best friend and partner in crime got married. What's even more unbelievable is that it started out as "just a date" to the prom. Over the years I've gotten to know Travis so much better and know that he makes Christine a happier, better person. And I am so thankful that we can all be such great friends. Although I live 4 hours from my family and Christine it's comforting to know that Christine and Travis have a strong bond with my family - they became next door neighbors last summer. I love that they spend so much time together - cooking out or having game nights - how cool is it that your mom and your best friend get to hang out all the time and enjoy eachothers company as much as you do. I'm truly a lucky person to know such wonderful people.

Yesterday, for our 3 year wedding anniversary (11th anniversary together) Mike and I dined at Fireflies, we shared a delicious caesar salad, calamari and chicken saltimbocca pizza. We had every intention of feuding on a putt-putt course, but (YOU GUESSED IT)...it rained. So instead we went to the movies to see Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Thank you honey for letting your manhood suffer to go see a sappy chic flick, I really appreciated it.

When we got home from the movie, it was still pouring rain, so rather than walking to get drinks we headed up to the apartment and popped open a bottle of wine. As I was sitting there sipping my wine, enjoying "So You Think You Can Dance" I received this:

Dear Mikey,

It seems like just yesterday we were sitting in spanish class taking notes, or practicing for Opus. Can you believe it's been 11 years since we first declared our love for each other? (I know that sounds corny). In the past 11 years we've been through a lot; happy times, sad times, fun times, crazy times. We've moved a couple times, from Salem, to Fredericksburg, to Alexandria, now Old Town. We've kept friendships with dear friends and made relationships with new friends. We've been to tons of amazing parties, lots of weddings, a couple funerals and everything in between. I'm so happy to have shared all of those special memories with you. Goodbye Sunshine State...

As you may have noticed in my previous posts, Florida has not been the most ideal vacation spot this week. All over the news for the last several days they have reported flooding up and down the coasts of Florida, reporting that they have received more rain from this "system" than they have with any of their previous hurricanes. Lucky us, we got to witness it. Just to recap the rest of the week:

Wednesday. I dropped Mike off at the convention center and encountered my first rude Floridian. Actually it was a cluster of 3; they were employees of the convention center who were just standing on the sidewalk outside of the convention center. Cabs lined the right side of the drop off strip, so I slowed down in order to drop Mike off and the 1 female rudely motioned for me to keep moving. As I pulled up to the 3 of them a guy rudely said pull off there, and pointed. I looked where he pointed and observed a cab pulling out, in my direction. So I said to them "Can I wait til he moves?". I don't think I was rude about it, but apparently I was, because as I rolled up my window to avoid rain and continue driving I heard the woman say "They've all been rude today" at which point I stopped the car, put it in reverse and began to roll down my window. Fortunately Mike was still in the car and urged me to continue on, which I did. As I left the parking lot it was all I could do not to drive back through and give them an ear full, but instead I went to get an iced coffee - Yummy!! I got back to the hotel, drank my coffee, watched Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood, something else and fell asleep in the bed sitting up, cause the sun was still no where to be seen. At about 11:00 I woke up to the sound of the vacuum in the room next door and rolled over to see the sun, making an appearance. I don't think I've ever gotten out of bed, brushed my teeth and changed so quickly. I gathered anything I thought I might need from the pool and headed down. GLORIOUS!!!!! The sun was bright and hot - everything I love about laying by the pool. I greased myself down in tanning oil - no SPF (I know, I know) and laid there for about an hour. Unfortunately the sun was short lived, as it began to downpour at about 12:10. As everyone scrambled to pickup their stuff and head for shelter I exchanged conversations with a couple from Spokane, Washington - who told me that it always rains where they live and that Wednesday was their last day in Florida....it had been sunny in Washington the whole time they had been in Florida - now that sucks. But we all made the best of the situation and headed to the covered outdoor bar. I opened up my book (wow, I know) and ordered fish tacos for lunch and a girly frozen beverage. About an hour later it was too windy and still down pouring to sit outside so I headed back up to our room, changed into workout clothes, headed to the gym for 45 minutes, then headed back and did a little cleaning up. I was supposed to pick Mike up at 5:30, but at 5:00 it was raining so hard outside that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, so I begged him to catch a cab back to the hotel, which he kindly did. And as soon as he got back, it stopped raining hard and went to a sprinkle...go figure. We were so excited for sprinkle rain that we both instantly thought - Lets go to the pool, but nope, the pool was closed because it had been thundering and lightning, we were told it possibly would be opened back up in an hour. Okay, whatever, we've waited this long...let's have dinner - AMAZING DINNER... at Miller's Ale House - cheap food, cheap but quality drinks, what more could you want? (SUN, sorry...) After gorging ourselves we decided it probably wouldn't be kind to bare our bulges at the pool, so we headed back to our hotel, where I fell asleep, and Mike got Haagen Dazs...again.

Thursday. Checkout day. Because Mike's conference was only a half day this day he decided to drive himself to and from, which left me to pack up the bags and checkout of the hotel by 11:00am. That sucked, I tried to call down for a late check out since I flight wasn't until 8:52pm, but nope, the Florida Parent Educators Association was checking in (home schoolers) and they needed our room. So, I showered, packed, checked our bags with the front desk and was down at the bar by 11:00 for chips/salsa and a blue moon. I knew Mike would be arriving at around 12:30, so I ordered another blue moon, and another, and another...so by the time Mike arrived, I was insanely happy that the sun was starting to show and a little intoxicated. Amazingly, Brooke (our friendly outdoor bartender and more importantly Bar Manager) was able to score us a late checkout and gave me a new set of keys. Awesome - we ordered a pizza, scarfed it down, changed into our swimsuits and headed to the pool, which was freezing from all the rain. Oh, but don't worry about intoxicated Sarah drowning herself, because after about 5 minutes of sun, it started to rain again. So, we packed up our stuff, closed our tab and headed back up to our room.

We left the resort at about 6pm and headed out to find some dinner before our flight at 8:52, SONIC showed up on our GPS and so we headed there, I love me a Strawberry Limeade!!! We arrived at the airport at 7:05 and headed to Airtran to check in. Mike swiped his card through the reader and a message popped up "You are too late to check in for your flight, please see an attendant" - haha, we're here an hour and a half early, must be a computer problem. So the attendant came over and took our Id's, then casually looked up and said "I don't have you on this flight, could it be under any other names?" WHAT? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. She proceeded to look at the computer and find that expedia had changed our flight at 11:27am that morning to the 7:26pm flight. Neither Mike, nor I had received a phone call, email ....nothing to alert us that our flight had changed. So I kindly asked, can we make that flight, "Nope". The Airtran rep was kind and explained our options, with the best option being taking the next available flight the next day, Friday, at 1:50pm. Wonderful, I know...we had just checked out of our beautiful resort room, returned our rental car and were dying to leave Florida (THE SUNSHINE STATE my A$$). So we agreed on the 1:50 flight, got our boarding passes, a number to a hotel and headed towards the waiting area, depressed and beaten down. Mike patiently called several hotels until he found one with a room and a shuttle to and from the airport, and within 20 minutes we were on our way to the Crowne Plaza. Upon checking in, all I could ask is if they had a pool and a bar....just at the off chance the sun might come out the next morning. The rest of the night was spent watching So You Think You Can Dance and hanging out.

Friday. We woke up and headed downstairs for breakfast, both of us deciding on the buffet. It was okay. We checked out and caught the shuttle to the airport, as soon as we boarded the shuttle it started to rain again. Great. When we got to the airport the rain stopped but it still looked gloomy. Whatever, so we had over an hour to kill so we headed to the airport Outback and ordered lunch and drinks at the bar. Our coconut shrimp and bloomin onion were delicious washed down with my club soda. We watched tv and chatted eager to leave, we headed to our gate at 1:15, it was packed, looked like a full flight. We boarded the plane and were seated, the flight attendants went through their "schpeel" and we were cleared to proceed to the runway, at which point, you guessed it, it starts raining. Raining so hard the plane was rocking and shaking. The pilot came over the speaker to say "Looks like a patch is right over us, we're gonna hang out for about 15 minutes then we're 5th in line to takeoff". After 15 minutes he came back over to say "They've closed down the runways to incoming and outgoing traffic, I'll update you as soon as I know more". Nearly 2 hours later our flight finally takes off and we arrived back in DC at 5:36pm.

I want to end this post by saying I know I am lucky to have taken a vacation at all, with the economy as crappy as it is. I know many of you were working last week while I laid in bed and watched HBO, so I am thankful, and well rested, just sad that I couldn't spend my vacation doing what I love the most - hanging out in/by the pool getting tan.

So even though it's rainy and dreary outside, Mike and I have noticed one amazing thing about Florida. Since we arrived everyone has been incredibly friendly. It's kind of like bizarro world. We walked in our hotel and were greeted with a "hello" by everyone we passed. We went to the grocery store and employees offered to assist us in finding exactly what we were looking for without us even asking for help. The cashier ushered us over to his register and had a friendly conversation with us, welcoming us to Orlando. Everyone holds doors open for eachother, signals when switching lanes, noone honks their car horns, it's incredible. Life is so much more pleasant when people are friendly.

Universal Studios...

This morning Mike and I woke up at 3:45am, showered and headed out to our taxi to get to Reagan airport. We boarded our flight to Atlanta at 6:00am, landed and transferred to our flight at Orlando. We arrived in Orlando at 10:20am then stood in line for our rental car for 30 minutes. When we got to the counter, picked up our Hyundai Sonata and headed to our hotel. As we're driving down the road, we see this humongous building - it was our resort - Rosen Shingle Creek. We pulled up to the front door and unloaded. Once inside, we were still amazed - beautiful doesn't even begin to describe it. Our room on the 4th floor has amazing views of the 3 pools and parts of the golf course. But enough of that - Universal Studios closed at 6pm so we headed back to the car for our 10 minute drive to the park. Once there we were amazed at how NOT crowded it was. We rode everything we wanted, with the longest line being a 10 minute wait. The Hulk, Spiderman, Dueling Dragons, Log Flume, and more... It was amazing! At about 5:45pm our bodies told us to sit and refuel...so we headed to Margaritaville for dinner and drinks. The day was perfect, and everything I could have asked for. Thank you Mike for having a conference in Orlando and booking an amazing hotel, you're the best!!! (and thanks MPR for paying).

Baltimore with the Merrill's...

This morning Mike and I drove up to Baltimore so we could visit for the day with his parents and sister. I haven't seen his parents since February, so I was looking forward to catching up, and seeing how Mike's dad's shoulder was doing (surgery - April 09). We pulled up to Lauren's at around 11:30, followed by his parents arrival at noon. Lauren was kind enough to prepare lunch for us all - 7 layer quesadillas, pasta salad, deli sandwiches, chips, dips and more. We were very impressed! For dessert, Patty had made some delicious chocolate chip cookie dough brownies, also incredibly delicious. After our food had settled a bit we headed out to the Inner Harbour. The sun was out, there was a nice breeze, it was a great day. We did a little shopping - courtesy of Mike's parents I have a new pair of sandals - YAY & Thanks!!! We were entertained at Power Plant Live by an extremely loud band, watched a unicyclist show, had some huge beers then ended the evening with a delicious dinner at Houlihan's. We would have loved to stay longer, but had to head home to drop Emma off with the Gardner's - who are kind enough to watch our baby while we're in Florida. Can't wait to see Mike, Patty and Lauren in June for the Watson wedding!!!

Katelyn's Farewell Party...

Tonight Mike and I joined Jill, Brett and some of Katelyn's close friends from high school at Union Jacks for dinner. For those of you who don't know, Katelyn is moving to Utah. She recently graduated from Penn State and is now moving onto work in the recreational rehab area. Katelyn will be making the cross country drive to Utah this Saturday, so keep her in your prayers that she has a safe trip and settles in quickly. Good luck Katelyn - keep us updated!!!

A Picnic...

Today was Sibley's Hospital Picnic!!! Sometimes I don't think people appreciate the events Sibley offers to the employee's, the generosity is unbelievable. Even in tough economic times our CEO, Bob Sloan continues to support the appreciation of our employees. This year, as in years past, the picnic is a time for all employees to break free from their desk chairs or nursing stations to come out and have fun, even if it's just for a half hour. The nutrition services staff who normally serve food in the cafeteria get a break from work too, I coordinate getting volunteers to serve the food. This year we needed 40 volunteers to serve from 11:30am-2pm, 10 people per half hour shift. They served hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, pulled barbecue chicken, baked beans, potato salad, pasta salad, cole slaw, watermelon and cookies....tons of food! Most volunteers are VP's, Directors and upper level Managers, so it's great to see them in hair nets and aprons, everyone enjoys seeing them do some real work (just kidding). We also had snow cone machines, karaoke, meet and greets with Mystics players and more!!! Enjoy the pictures!
