Welcome Baby Aaron...

Last night, I called Jill to ask her a question, she returned my call at about 9pm. We talked for about an hour about girls nights, Peter's upcoming birthday, and her pregnancy. Specifically we talked about how big the baby in her belly might be. Brett was at the movie theater with Jill's cousin Hannah so Jill was getting some stuff done around the house. Jill seemed really concerned that she wasn't going to make it to her scheduled c-section date (Aug 19). I laughed and jokingly said "My cell phone will be fully charged and by my side at all times".... because for most of you who know me...I haven't been the greatest about answering my phone lately. (Sorry) She explained she had a doctor appointment Wednesday morning and was eager to ask the doctor about moving up the c-section.

Mike and I went to bed at about 10:30, trying to catch up from our long eventful weekend. At 1:05am my cell phone rang on my night stand. I sat up, half asleep and answered the phone. In the calmest voice I've ever heard Jill said "Sarah, we're having this baby tonight". In my akward wake I said "okay, well we'll see you tomorrow" then laid back down to go back to sleep. Fortunately, the movement and ring from the phone woke Mike up and he rolled over to ask what was going on. I said "Jill's in labor" and still.... laid in bed trying to go to sleep. It only took about 1 minute longer for me to sit up and slap Mike - then we were up, dressed and on our way to Virginia Hospital Center.

We got to the hospital at about 2am to find Brett & Jill being prepped for her c-section.

At 3:13 am this morning 6 pounds 2 ounces 20 inches long Aaron Michael Gardner entered the world. Dad, Mom and big Brother are doing great. Because Aaron was 5 weeks early his lungs are a bit underdeveloped and to be precautionary he will be in the NICU for the next 3-7 days. Please keep the Gardner family in your prayers - both for Baby Aaron and rest for Mom & Dad.

Christine & Travis' New House...

To continue in the weekend festivities....on Sunday - while in Salem - I helped Christine, my best friend, paint her new house. Christine and her husband Travis have been living in Blacksburg for a few years while Christine finished school at Radford. It's so great that they moved closer in.... oh, but wait - they bought the house right next door to my parents!!!!! YIPPEE! This means I can see them anytime we go home to visit my rents! It'll be great, because there was nothing more dreadful than traveling 4 hours to Salem then another hour to Blacksburg, only to get back in the car to drive back to Alexandria....BLAH!!! Here is a picture of their new home. They haven't moved their stuff in yet, so I'll post pics next time I visit!!!

Congrats Travis & Christine!!!!!

Roanoke/Salem for the Weekend...

Friday, Mike and I left work a little early to begin our travels to Salem to visit both his parents and mine. We began our trip at about 4pm (2 hours later than we had hoped). The traffic on the beltway wasn't all that horrific, but 66 was another story. I normally drive, because I'm a horrible passenger, but Mike decided he'd take the wheel this trip. He always complains about my road rage.... but come to find out.... Mikey has some built up aggression towards other drivers as well. It seemed like everytime we'd make a break another slowdown would come out of no where. And it didn't get any better once we got on 81 South. I felt like we had a flashing sign on our car that read "If you drive slow... get in front of us!" Which made me then think of a great invention. I want to create a scrolling sign - much like the ones used on public transportation buses that merely say their destination - but mine would say things like "Get out of the left lane moron" or "It's the pedal on the right" or "Go back to North Caroline (or Maryland)" because we all know those states are notorious for bad drivers (love ya)! We saw a beautiful sunset and the "Rage Mobile" finally made it into Salem at about 9pm...

We dropped Emma off at Mike's parents house then headed into Salem to meet up with Patty, Mike and some of their friends at Mac N' Bobs. Many of you might remember this place - we went there after our wedding - I got carded in my wedding gown. (oh....fun times)

After a delicious quiche and soup, some hot wings for Mikey we headed back to the Merrill's to crash. We got up early (10am) Saturday morning and took full advantage of having a driveway and hose - we washed and waxed our car...I shampooed the rugs - our car looks better than the day we bought it! Let's see how long that last. We spent the rest of the day hanging out on the front porch chatting... until we couldn't ignore the smell of chicken cutlets coming from the kitchen. I swear, Mike's mom could open a restaurant and only serve her chicken cutlets or chicken parm...she'd make a killing!!! Oh, don't forget the chicken pinwheels!!! Sorry - I'm hungry.

At about 5 we headed over to my parents house, where you could smell the ribs cooking on the grill when we pulled into the driveway. Needless to say, we gorged ourselves on more food and then had a "friendly" game of Phase 10 with Travis & Christine.

We hung out on my parents back porch and admired my moms gardening capabilities and then went to bed... church the next morning!

I can't explain how much I love Salem. Our families are there and we practically know everyone in "town". When we visit there is always so much to fit in and there's hardly enough time to see all the people we want to. It's so relaxing and slow paced there. It's funny...I lived there for 22 years and hated it... nothing to do, no cool places to shop, only 1/maybe 2 good bars... now, it's hard to get me back in the car to come back to Alexandria. If you haven't had a chance to make a trip to Salem with us, I highly recommend it. It's a totally different world...I think you'd enjoy it!

Jill's Baby Shower...

Earlier today we held a baby shower for Jill & Baby Aaron Michael (my God Son). We invited lots of beautiful women to enjoy the delicious Lebanese food prepaired by Georgia. We had mini spinach pies, kafta, hummus and pita. Thanks Georgia!!!

Leigh coordinated the craft & shower games. We played a fierce game of "Name Those Celebrity Babies"... Andy won that one. Then we played "Pins in Rice" (harder than it sounds)... Katelyn won that one. And lastly we played "Guess How Much Toilet Paper"... Sarah B won that one. Thanks Leigh!!!

We had such a great time. Jill recieved so many wonderful and necessary gifts like diapers, clothes and her pump. Thanks to all that attended! I'm sure I speak for all the ladies saying "can't wait to meet you Aaron"!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Goode's Birthday...

Tonight Alex & Troy, Brett & Jill, Nick & Leigh, Heather & Anthony, Lauren & Katie, and Mike & I went out for Alex's 27th birthday. We had reserved 1 lane ahead of time for 2 hours. We enjoyed bowling (for the most part - stupid electronics) and appetizers. See bowling videos below:

After bowling we decided to head over to La Tasca for dinner & sangria where we were joined by Alex's friends Danielle & Greg. We had such a great time chatting and laughing. It was a night enjoyed by all ~ regardless of our bowling scores!

Wolf Trap ~ Sister Hazel & Pat McGee...

Tonight Mike, I, my sister Lauren, her friend Katie, Alana, Adam, Kristen and Kristen met up at Wolf Trap for a fabulous show by Sister Hazel followed by Pat McGee. We all purchased tickets for the "lawn" and packed a fabulous picnic dinner. Mikey was kind enough to come home a little early from work to grill some chicken and burgers. Adam brought the condiments and buns. Alana made a delicious orzo salad with feta and cherries. Kristen baked delicious brownies. Lauren and Katie contributed chips and dip. It was a fabulous evening with awesome music. I would highly recommend making a trip out to Wolf Trap - definately worth the $ and gas.

How I Clean...

Most of you who know me well enough know that I like to keep things pretty clean & organized. But as one of my close friends said recently "I'm organized but not clean"...and recently that's exactly how I feel.

Before Mike and I moved in I was a self diagnosed (with the help of close friends) as an obsessive compulsive neat freak. Everything had a place, that place was to have no accumulated dust and certainly no dog hair (before Emma Sue). Now a days, with working nearly 50 hours a week, Sport & Health, girls nights, Bible study and friends it's hard to find time to brush my teeth....much less vacuum, dust, mop, do laundry and other household duties. Even now, when my long time friends make comments on my organization and cleanliness Mike gives an "oddball" look - clearly disagreeing with their impressions. I don't know how people do it, we don't even have kids yet and I can't even imagine how my mom worked 2 jobs, had 2 kids and kept a spotless ... and I do mean SPOTLESS house.

When Mike and I first moved in together, I'd try to explain how to clean certain things and Mike would attempt it...I'd stand over his shoulder or go behind him and correct his imperfections. This would result in a pointless argument 99% of the time. During football season, I do my cleaning on Sundays. I send Mike away... and I really do mean "send away" to a friend's apartment, sports bar, etc. I do this because I like things my way (I know...you're all shocked). But when it's no longer football season Mike enjoys spending a calm Sunday afternoon in the recliner feet up - right in the middle of the living room - tv blaring - computer in lap, etc. HELP!!!!!!!! The actual process of cleaning is somewhat of a relaxation tool for me. It's just recently, I haven't had the time to truly dedicate an evening or an afternoon to cleaning the way I like to....detail oriented cleaning. So, if you're in the area and find that you have nothing to do on Sundays or need a partner in crime on... please let me know... I'd love to arrange a "Playdate" for Mikey! (I mean that in the nicest way possible).

Broken Air Conditioner...

Last year at about this time our air conditioner in our fabulous apartment decided to stop working. We came home one night and the digital thermostat was just blank - no life at all. Last summer it took them nearly 2 months to resolve the issue - making due with 1 window unit to supply air to our entire apartment (living room, kitchen and bathroom) - YUCK!!!

Much to our dismay this horrible event has recurred - we came home Wednesday night to find the temperature in apartment reaching the upper 80's. I immediately sent an email to our landlords to let them know or AC wasn't working - explaining it was the same situation as last year. We then spent an hour assembling our 1 standup fan to set at the end of our bed for the long night. Thursday morning I woke up at 4:30am sweating my a$$ off. I took a shower and ended up going into work an hour early - looking forward to my igloo of an office. I waited til about 11 o'clock for an email or a phone call from our landlord ... NOTHING. So I called the office - no one answered - I left a voicemail explaining that an email had already been sent & what the problem was. Finally, at 2pm I couldn't take it anymore - so I called our landlord's cell phone - it sounded like she was enjoying her day with her kids at the POOL .... grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! She said she had called and checked her work voicemails but didn't have any messages from me and would call me right back. I got a call back 5 minutes later saying she in fact did get my message - but thought it was "Sam" calling about an AC unit - explaining she didn't know a Sam or what this "Sam" was referring to. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I'll give it til tomorrow - and if it's not fixed
Mike, Emma and I are going to check into
Morrison House and Walker Real Estate
will be footing the bill :)

Happy Birthday JILL!!!

HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
JILLIAN!!!

~The Merrills!

Alana moves...

My close friend Alana is preparing to move (today/tomorrow) out of Alexandria....... but don't worry, she's not going too far - just to Arlington (boo!). So in an effort to repay the many times she has helped Mike & I move, we went over earlier today to help her with some smaller boxes and furniture that would just get tossed around in a big moving truck. We made 2 trips back & forth ... I really think we made great progress. Here are the before pictures of her new apartment. I promised her I wouldn't post the "in between" pictures of her "messy/mid moving" apartment, but will post pictures once she's all moved in.

So congratulations on your move - and thanks for dinner!

Jill's Birthday Party...

Friday night we went out for our close friend Jillian's birthday. Jill is always fun and spunky and full of great ideas.
For her birthday she wanted to do something out of the ordinary run of the mill party... so we went to Nick's Nightclub for some country line dancing and southern style karoake.
The evening started with country line dancing lessons.... food, then drinks. And once some of us mustered up enough courage.... KAROAKE!!!

I apologize, but I unknowingly took these videos sideways and the quality could be better...but they're still worth watching!
Thank you to Anthony for the sweet serenade...

And to Mikey for making me feel like a woman!

So thanks to everyone for coming out and celebrating the birth of JILLIAN!!!

Props to Sure Happy It's Thursday....

In the Spring and Fall of 2007 Mike played in the Arlington Division of WAKA Kickball. As stated in earlier posts this season we played in Alexandria. But because we missed our dear kickballers oh so much we went out to support Sure Happy It's Thursday as they played their playoff game tonight. Congrats to S.H.I.T. for a solid win over DC Dominance. And a special thanks to Heather & Anthony for welcoming us back to watch. We miss you guys and your awesome socks!!!

4th of July...

For the first time ever we didn't have a traditional 4th of July celebration. It was fabulous. Mike's sister Lauren came down from Baltimore for the weekend to visit. We started the 4th off with a delicious Happy Birthday America meal at Don Pablo's Mexican Restaurant. Nothing like a true American meal....enchiladas & margaritas. We then went and picked up Emma to go burn some energy at the dog park. Came back showered and then time for more eating.... but this time it was with our great friends Brett & Jill Gardner, Troy & Alex Goode, Nick McKeta & Leigh Robinson, and Mike's sister Lauren at the Georgetown Waterfront restaurant Agraria. We enjoyed a 4 course meal with wine pairings .... YUMMMMMY!

Flower delivery for Sarah...

So, I know everyone out there reading this already knows what I'm about to write....but my husband is the greatest.

It's been a crappy couple of weeks, tons of work, being sick, etc. But he knew just what to do to help cheer me up... he sent me flowers to my office!

To make things even better....they were paraded through the hallways of the hospital on the way to my office by the delivery man and just about everybody that walked by my office that day commented on how beautiful they were and how lucky I am to have a loving husband.

I AGREE.... LOVE YOU MIKEY!

Goodbye summer cold...

Finally after an entire week of feeling like $h!t I think my cold is finally gone. To summarize:
